About Brunswick American Legion Post 9

American Legion Post 9 – A Coastal Beacon Since 1919

Chartered on August 9, 1919, Brunswick American Legion Post 9 was formed just months after the national American Legion organization received its federal charter. As one of Georgia’s earliest chartered Posts, it was founded by local veterans returning from the First World War, eager to build a place of camaraderie, continued service, and advocacy in Glynn County.

Situated near the intersection of Interstate 95 and U.S. Highway 17, Post 9 is uniquely positioned along Georgia’s southeastern coast. The surrounding region—rich with maritime history, military legacy, and Southern resilience—offered a fitting home for what would become a lasting institution in both Brunswick and the broader veteran community.

Brunswick: A City Steeped in Service

Founded as a port city, Brunswick has long been integral to Georgia’s coastal and national security roles. As early as the 18th century, Brunswick served as a port of entry, and by the time of World War II, it was a hub of military industry. The Glynco Naval Air Station, established nearby, became the world’s largest blimp base, escorting convoys and protecting the Atlantic coast from U-boat threats. Simultaneously, shipyards in Brunswick produced Liberty Ships to support Allied war efforts.

This culture of service and defense naturally aligned with Post 9’s mission. As the city grew in its strategic importance, so too did the Post’s commitment to supporting the men and women who served.

Serving the Community Through Generations

Throughout its history, Post 9 has maintained a continuous presence in Glynn County, participating in civic life, honoring fallen comrades, and advocating for veterans' needs. Early records from city directories in the 1920s show the Post active and contributing to local civic affairs. As the decades passed, Post 9 expanded its focus to include youth development, patriotic education, and volunteerism.

The Post supported Boys State and JROTC programs, awarded scholarships and medals in local schools, and ensured the proper retirement of American flags. With every effort, it remained grounded in the Legion's four pillars: Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation, National Security, Americanism, and Children & Youth.

Present-Day Commitment

Today, Brunswick Post 9 continues to evolve while holding firm to its founding values. In addition to monthly meetings and commemorative ceremonies, the Post offers walk-in services three days a week, supporting veterans with:

  • Peer-to-peer support and conversation

  • Tech help for MyLegion.org and VA.gov

  • Guidance with VA claims and benefits navigation

  • Notary services (by appointment)

  • Resource referrals for food, housing, and employment

Each Saturday evening, Post 9 also hosts Bingo—a community staple that draws players from across the region and helps fund the Post's charitable programs. Food and refreshments are provided by the Auxiliary, and raffle drawings and door prizes keep the night fun for all.

Legacy and Leadership

Post 9’s leadership, elected annually by the membership, reflects its longstanding values of service, integrity, and mutual support. These officers uphold the duties of stewardship, program planning, and direct service to veterans and their families.

Whether supporting honor guard ceremonies, coordinating local veteran assistance, or managing community events, the officers of Post 9 carry forward a tradition now more than a century old.

A Legacy of Purpose

As Post 9 enters its second century of service, its presence remains vital to the Brunswick area. It is a home base for veterans, a hub for patriotic service, and a guardian of American values in action.

In the words often echoed at meetings and ceremonies: “For God and Country, we continue to serve.”
